After a hiatus of several years, the Smithers Health Fair aims to highlight local health and wellness services
After several years, the Smithers Health Fair is returning this month, aiming to highlight the many health and wellness services available in the community.
The event is organized by the BC Community Response Network (BCCRN), which normally focuses on raising awareness of adult abuse and neglect, but also takes pride in hosting events that benefit the broader community, it says.
Clara Donnelly, BCCRN’s Smithers coordinator, has been instrumental in bringing back the fair.
“I want people to understand, no matter where you are, or what age you are, you can continue to have new goals and ideas about yourself,” Donnelly said.
Although the event is geared toward seniors, Donnelly emphasized that it is open to people of all ages.
“I want people in Smithers to be aware of all the amazing services we have here. I have heard many people say we don’t have any, but that’s just not true. We have a lot that can help people along their journey in life.”
The fair will feature a variety of exhibitors, offering interactive experiences for attendees. There will be booths for larger exhibitors and smaller tables for those providing more limited information.
“The idea is for people to come and interact with all the different practitioners to get a better idea of what they do, and how they do it,” Donnelly explained.
Among the highlights will be a yoga instructor offering demonstrations, as well as practitioners in Qigong, physiotherapy, massage therapy, reflexology, and more
In the morning, attendees can engage with these demonstrations, while the afternoon will feature speakers providing in-depth information on health topics.
“The idea is to make it interactive and fun. It’s about what you can do that’s good for your health, in addition to whatever your regular medical needs are,” Donnelly added.
The Smithers Health Fair will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church on Walnut Drive. Entry is free, and visitors can expect a range of talks, demonstrations, and refreshments throughout the day.
